Respectful Relations.  Boys are encouraged to see that respectful relations between farmers and grocery stores helps keep food on the shelves.

September Notes

Hello Pack,

It is my honor to write my first newsletter as the new Cubmaster of Pack 111.  I have been a den leader in the pack for the past 2 years, Wolves and Bears, and a Tiger leader previous to that in Korea (on the good side).  My son, Connor, is now a Webelos 1, and my twin boys, Sean and Ryan, will be Tigers in 2 years.  Enough about me!

I would like to express my gratitude to Bill Grabert for putting forth such an awesome effort as our Cubmaster these past 2 years!  His leadership did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded Cubmaster of the Year in the Yolo District!

Wow!  I have some big shoes to fill, but I, with the help of our new Assistant Cubmaster, Steven Nelson, will take the lead from Bill and do my best to keep us on the right track toward the Arrow of Light.  This should be an easy gig for me with all of the pack volunteers that stepped up.  Thanks to all of you!

As every year, we have some new faces-mostly in the Tiger ranks.  We have also shed some old faces-mostly the Webelos 2 who graduate to the Boy Scouts.  It is all part of the Cub Scout circle of life!

As the Law of the Pack states…”the cub scout helps the pack go…” and so do the adult volunteers.  If you have some time to offer the pack, contact me or one of the other leaders and find out where you might be the most help.  Maybe you would like to be part of a committee or even an Assistant Den Leader!

SEPTEMBER PACK MEETING, 11 SEP.  “CUB SCOUT EXPRESS”

Kristy Powell and her Wolf Den 3 did an awesome job on the whole thing.    Made my job easy.  We have all of our Den Leader positions filled thanks to our second Tiger Leader stepping up at the meeting!  Looks like we are on the right track!

Purpose and Design:
Character Development.  Boys learn that character is a strong indicator of who they are.
Personal Achievement.  The first den contribution to the pack meeting is a great way to start Cub Scouts on their trail of personal achievements through Scouting.
Core Values.
Compassion.  Building the railroads across our country was a hardship for many.  Such difficulties can provide an opportunity for boys to consider compassion.
Faith.  Boys learn the Cub Scout Promise as the first part of their Bobcat requirements.  The aspect of faith is an important part of that promise.

THIS MONTH-See Calendar for Details

  1. Scout Registration – Every year Scouts and Scout Leaders must register (or re-register) with Pack 111 and the BSA (Boy Scouts of America) council. This year the cost is $50 for the first Scout and $40/Scout for any sibling Scouts. This includes the official BSA registration fee and a subscription to Boys Life magazine. The great majority, however, is used by Pack 111 to pay for awards, pins, belt loops, patches, and supplies for Pack activities. Tracy Soeth, our Pack Registrar this year, will be at the Pack meetings with forms for you to fill out. She can also take your checks made out to “Pack 111”. Please note: If this registration fee is a hardship for any family, scholarships are available. We are serious about this. We (the Pack leadership) do not want any family to turn away from Pack 111 because of the registration cost. Please talk to Tracy or myself if the cost is a hardship.  We would prefer you volunteer your time as payment of fees.
  2. Auburn Century Bike Race and overnight campout, Sep 15(Cubs will man an aid station).  Camping in Auburn will follow the race.  Contact April Morris or the Rod Layman for information.
  3. Cal Football game trip with Troup 466.  Sep 15All slots have been filled.
  4. Popcorn – Popcorn sales are started! Popcorn sales is a major fundraiser for our Pack and for the local council. In the past we have relied very heavily on Popcorn sales. Contact Beth Mitcham to volunteer at ejmitcham@ucdavis.edu
  5. Rummage Sale, DCC Lawn. Sep 29- If you didn’t get a volunteer position yet, the greatest need is on the Rummage Sale Committee.  The Pack 111 Rummage Sale is our biggest fundraiser of the year and much of the work needed to make it a success will occur over the summer.  Contact Lori Kibbe (Lori.Kibbe@VerizonWireless.com) ASAP to volunteer.
  6. Scout Expo (Beale Air Force Base) Sept. 28-30. http://yolobsa.editme.com/expo
  7. Summer in Review –
    • Camp Cayuse– Another successful year!  The evening camp is filled with great activities geared toward achievements toward rank advancement and fun.  If you can’t afford the time off work to travel to summer camp, Cayuse is right down the road in Woodland after work hours.  It is time to start planning "Cubs of the Roundtable" a Medieval Theme for 2008.  Interested?  Contact Campcayuse@yahoo.com
    • CAMP LASSEN 2007! – 21 boys and 18 adults made up the 2nd largest pack at the camp!  We took 1st in the Banner Competition, 2nd in the Campsite Competition, and everyone crossed the finish line for fun!  We had a record number of Polar Bears (Brrrrr!), Whittlers and C.O.P.E. Contenders.  Don’t forget “The 2 Headed Crew of Captain Blue!”-What a great time we had doing that skit! Thanks to Cameron Smith and everyone who organized the trip!
    • End of Summer Pool Party – Our Pool party was a huge success. It was great to see everyone, and several new Scout families interested in joining Pack 111 came for burgers, dogs, snow cones, and swimming.
    • Car Wash – Thank you to Michelle Weaver for organizing a fun and profitable car wash.

June Note

Hello Pack,

I am pleased to announce that, starting in August, Pack 111 has the honor to have a new Cubmaster, Rod Layman!!!  Rod has been the Den leader of Den 1 for 2 years, a Tiger Leader in another Pack before that, and the father of a Webelo I (Connor) and twin sons (Sean and Ryan) who will be ready for Cub Scouts in about 2 more years.  Welcome Rod! We will have a formal Cubmaster transition at Camp Lassen the end of July.

Thank you all for the great two years I have been Cubmaster, and thanks for the recognition you have given me, both at our last den meeting and with the district, where I was awarded Cubmaster of the Year in the Yolo District.  It really has been great.  I will be continuing on as a Webelos Den Leader and, with any luck, I will still get a chance to sing a song with the Pack now and then.  I want to thank all of this year’s volunteers for making the Pack go and especially, Kathy Csaposs for her hard work getting all the boys their awards this year.

I am also very pleased to announce that we have successfully filled nearly all of the Pack volunteer positions for the 2007 – 2008 year, including the very important position of Committee Chair, which will be shared by Blair Romer and Mike Panelli.  Thank you so much for stepping up to run the Pack.

If you didn’t get a volunteer position yet, the greatest need is on the Rummage Sale Committee.  The Pack 111 Rummage Sale is our biggest fundraiser of the year and much of the work needed to make it a success will occur over the summer.  Contact Lori Kibbe (Lori.Kibbe@VerizonWireless.com) ASAP to volunteer.

  1. June Pack Ice Cream Party – Tuesday, June 12, 7:00, Davis Community Church Lawn.   Instead of a formal Pack meeting in June, we are just having an Ice Cream Social.  I will bring ice cream, scoopers, paper bowls, and plastic spoons, and we can take turns scooping.  It will be fun just to talk and play.
  2. Car Wash, June 30, Albertson’s parking lot - the date has changed for the car wash due to a conflict with a Cayuse training.  We will meet at Albertson's (Anderson & Covell) at 9 a.m in the side parking lot next to the recycle bin.  Michelle Weaver (mlweaver@ucdavis.edu) is organizing this fundraiser.  Please let her know what you can bring or donate to help. If you cannot donate your time then please donate water and/or snacks. Items we need are: buckets, a stepladder for tall cars, a couple hoses, shammies and sponges.  Michelle will make the signs, get the soap, and make a card for all of us to sign to thank Albertson's for their help.
  3. May Review –
    • Cubs and Bugs Pack Meeting – Thanks to Michelle Weaver and Bear Den 6 for the great Bug Show from the Bohart Museum, and thanks again to you all for making the volunteer recruitment such a success.  Also, thanks again for the Scout Shop gift card!

·        Christopher Nelson Heroism Award – In case you missed it, I am attaching the article in the May 22 Davis Enterprise.

·        Family Campout at Negro Bar Park, June 2– This trip was great fun, with a bike ride, historical tour, water fights, a great dinner, a campfire with skits & a flag ceremony, and breakfast.  Thank you Kibbe family for organizing it.  If you missed this family campout, be sure to try to make it a family campout next year.  They are fun and it is great to have siblings along.

  1. Camp Cayuse To Infinity and Beyond – I believe that registration is closed for the 5-evening camp (June 18 – 22)Contact Karen Karoly at karen77@pacbell.net if you have any questions.
  2. CAMP LASSEN 2007! – There is still space for our overnight Cub Scout Summer Camp starting Sunday, July 29 and returning Wednesday, August 1.  The cost for Cub Scouts is $170 and the cost for adults is $157.  Every Scout must have an adult responsible for him.  It is really a fun and worthwhile Scouting experience that every boy should have.  Contact Cameron Smith (smithcam@worldnet.att.net) to sign up.  If you are already registered, remember:

·        If you are 40 and over, you MUST HAVE a signed class 3 Medical Form (http://davispack111.org/pdfs/33412.pdf) documenting a physical examination during the 12 months prior to Camp.  If you have not had a physical exam since August 1 last year, make an appointment now so you can guarantee you will get it before Camp.

·        If you are under 40 (including Scouts) you have to have a class 2 Medical form (http://davispack111.org/pdfs/34414.pdf) documenting a physical exam within 36 months.

  1. Next year’s Calendar – I am attaching a draft of next year’s Pack calendar so that you can plan ahead for the year.  There are still a few question marks and some things could change, but I hope this will help.

May Notes

Hello Pack,

I send out these emails every month in order to keep all of you informed about what is going on with the Pack. It seems, however, that more and more it is obvious that many of you don’t read them. Also, this will be the last month our website will be updated unless someone takes over webmaster duties. I can’t help but question my effort in writing these notes if all I hear is that nobody reads them. For those of you who do read this, here is the news:

1. We need Pack volunteers We especially need a new Cubmaster and Committee Chair. Speaking candidly, being Cubmaster is really fun, but it is not healthy for the Pack to have one Cubmaster or one Committee Chair for too long. I have been Cubmaster for 2 years. In addition, I have been the administrative leader (normally the Committee Chair position) during that time as well. Because of that concentration of responsibility, I think our Pack is at risk of decline if I continue in both positions much longer. I do not want to Pack to be hurt when I leave, and the best way to avoid that possibility is to turn the jobs over to new volunteers. Most importantly, new volunteers with fresh enthusiasm and younger Scouts also keep the Pack fun for the Cubs. Ideally, what I have been doing for the last 2 years should be split into 3 positions:

  • Cubmaster (the front man at all the Pack activities, and the leader of the Pack for the Scouts);
  • Committee Chair (the person who organizes, plans, and makes sure everything is getting done, the liaison between Pack 111 and the BSA District & Council organizations, and the administrative leader of the Pack);
  • and the Pack Secretary (the person who keeps Leadership meeting minutes and helps write information for distribution to the Pack)

I would be willing to continue for another year in either Cubmaster or Committee Chair roles if absolutely necessary, but not both.

Other volunteers are also essential.
Last month I sent out a table of volunteer positions. I am attaching the most updated version this month, and guess what? It looks pretty much the same. In brainstorming about what we could do to provide incentive for you to volunteer, the leadership has decided to implement “priority pre-registration” for Pack events. In other words, if you are a volunteer at the Pack level, you get to pre-register for Pack events with limited space (camp outs, field trips, etc.) before other families.

2. May Pack meeting – Cubs and Bugs Galore, hosted by Bear Den 6, Tuesday, May 8 at 7:00 PM – Michelle Weaver’s Bear Den 6 has arranged a special visit from UCD’s Bohart Museum of Entomology Wolf Den 4 has some really fun activities in store for us. In addition to Bugs and Bug activities, this meeting will have:

  • Graduation – All Scouts will be moving up in rank with a new scarf, slide & hat even if they have not earned their badge this year. Please talk to your den leader about the details if your den leader has not already coordinated with you.
  • Special Recognition of Davis Community Church – We will be presenting the Davis Community Church, our Sponsoring Organization, with a thank you card and a donation.
  • A Special Surprise Award - One of our Scouts will be receiving a special award from the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Camp Lassen – This is the last chance to register and pay for our 3-night Cub Scout resident camp (see #8 below). Bring your checkbook. Remember, if you are over 40 you need a medical checkup. Make your appointment now.

3. April Review –

  • Cub Café – Thank you to Lori Kibbe and Wolf Den 4 for the fun meeting and congratulations to all the Scouts who earned awards.
  • Camp Rob Hill – Very unfortunately, the trip was rained out but has been replaced with another camping trip (see below).

4. Family Campout at Negro Bar Park, June 2– This trip is a replacement for the trip that got rained out in April, so the families who were registered for that trip get first priority. Negro Bar group camp is on the shore of Lake Natomas in Folsom. Lori Kibbe (Lori.Kibbe@VerizonWireless.com) should have more information about space availability at the Pack meeting.

5. Ice Cream Party, June 12, 7:00 PM – Instead of a Pack meeting in June we will be having a family party! The Pack will furnish the ice cream, the kids can play on the lawn and the adults can get to know each other a little. I’ll send out more details in my next letter, but please put it on your calendar.

6. Car Wash, June 16, Albertson’s parking lot - This is a Pack fundraiser and we’ll need lots of people for washing and drying cars as well as hoses, buckets, etc. Details will follow.

7. Camp Cayuse To Infinity and Beyond – It is still possible to late-register for $70 for the 5-evening camp (June 18 – 22). Contact Karen Karoly at karen77@pacbell.net for info. If you have a son in Kindergarten, he can go as a Tiger Cub for $50 still, but an adult must be with him for the whole camp. Contact Karen for the details.

8. CAMP LASSEN 2007! – Register now for our overnight Cub Scout Summer Camp starting Sunday, July 29 and returning Wednesday, August 1. The cost for Cub Scouts is $170 and the cost for adults is $157. Every Scout must have an adult responsible for him. It is really a fun and worthwhile Scouting experience that every boy should have. Please bring your checkbook to the Pack meeting to sign up. Spaces are limited and you do not have a confirmed reservation until you are paid. If paying for camp is a financial hardship, but you would still like to go, please tell Chris Smith at the camp registration table.

  • Note: if you are 40 and over, you need a signed class 3 Medical Form (pdfs/33412.pdf) documenting a physical examination during the 12 months prior to Camp. If you have not had a physical exam since August 1 last year, make an appointment now so you can guarantee you will get it before Camp.
  • All people under 40 (including Scouts) have to have a class 2 Medical form (pdfs/34414.pdf) documenting a physical exam within 36 months.

April Notes

Hello Pack,

Happy Spring to you all. I started out last month stating that we need a new webmaster for our Pack website, www.davispack111.org. Unfortunately, no one has stepped up to do it yet. There are many more positions that need to be filled for next year too, including mine. If you have any questions about what it means to be a Cubmaster, Committee Chair, or any other position please contact me. I am attaching a spreadsheet showing the volunteer positions for the Pack, with the open positions at the bottom. I am also putting it in this email. As you can see, most of the Den leaders are doing double duty in Pack positions too and they need help. In order to make the Pack work, every family should be helping out in these Pack-level positions. I will be the first to admit most of them are pretty thankless jobs, but the boys can’t have a Cub Scout Pack without them.

Here is the news for this month:

1. April Pack meeting - Club Cafe, hosted by Wolf Den 4, Tuesday, April 17 at 7:00 PM – Lori Kibbe’s Wolf Den 4 has some really fun activities in store for us. This meeting will also be packed with awards and advancements so bring a camera.

  • Note: We need a count for Camp Lassen (see #5 below) at this meeting. Please register and pay at the meeting.

2. March Review –

  1. Scouting for Food – It was another successful event for STEAC. I heard that participation was pretty low for some of the Dens in Pack 111 however. Bill Muller, our Scouting for Food coordinator, will be lobbying for moving the dates next year so that the pick-up does not conflict with the Little League opening day.
  2. Webelo Graduation – It seemed to me that everyone enjoyed the ceremony. It is hard for me to believe that these families are now gone from the Pack, the families of the younger Scouts now have to step up and make their own marks on the Pack.
  3. Sharks in the Dark – I heard it was really fun. Hopefully, we will see pictures soon!

3. Camp Rob Hill April 21– Registration is, unfortunately, closed. If you are registered and you cannot go, please contact Lori Kibbe (Lori.Kibbe@VerizonWireless.com) right away. There several families on the waiting list who would LOVE to take your place.

4. Camp Cayuse To Infinity and BeyondIt is not too late to register for Camp Cayuse. The early registration deadline is past, but it is still possible to late-register for $70 for the 5-evening camp (June 18 – 22). Contact Karen Karoly at karen77@pacbell.net for info. If you have a son in Kindergarten, he can go as a Tiger Cub for $50 still, but an adult must be with him for the whole camp. Contact Karen for the details.

  • Note: if you are 40 and over, you need a signed class 3 Medical Form (PDF) documenting a physical examination during the 12 months prior to Camp. If you have not had a physical exam since August 1 last year, make an appointment now so you can guarantee you will get it before Camp.
  • All people under 40 (including Scouts) have to have a class 2 Medical form (PDF) documenting a physical exam within 36 months.

February Notes

Hello Everyone,

In my experience, this is the time of year when kids activities really kick in. Little League is starting soon and we have got lots of Cub Scout activities from now until the end of the year (including the summer): see below… Plan ahead and sign up early. Also… remember to view our wonderful website often.

Here is the news for this month…

February Pack meeting and BLUE AND GOLD DINNER, Friday, February 16 at 6:30 PM – This is a family event for the Pack and everyone is invited. Hosted by Wolf Den 5, it has an “Aloha Cub Scouts” theme. You should have all received an email earlier (1/13) with the details about the pot luck dinner, centerpieces, etc… If you did not get it, let me or Mike Panelli (panellime@sbcglobal.net) know. All the Den leaders should have let Mike know how many people from each Dan are attending the Dinner and the food for the Den potluck should be getting organized.

1. Friends of Scouting – at the Blue and Gold Dinner, in addition to having great entertainment from the Pacific Island Dancers, a representative from the Yolo District of the Golden Empire Council will be present to pitch the annual Friends of Scouting donation campaign. We would really like to have everyone give something to help support Scouting beyond our Pack.

2. January Review –

  • Thank you to the Bear Dens 1 & 6 for hosting the January Pack meeting and thank you to Lloyd Knox for the great South Pole presentation. I apologize for the extra long announcements that prevented us from playing the game Dens 1 & 6 prepared.
  • The Pack Trip to the Chabot Space & Science Center was great. The planetarium show was particularly spectacular. Thank you to the Kibbe family for organizing this.
  • January District Round Table – The new Quality Unit program was explained. In order to be a Quality Unit for 2007, we have to meet our commitments for things such as number of trained leaders, number of new members, percentage of boys making their rank, and percentage retention.
  • University of Scouting – There were probably a couple of thousand Scouter adults and Den Chiefs from all over Northern California for this event in Woodland. From Pack 111-, Kristy & Jim Powell (and Boy Scout son Ryan taking Den Chief training), Lauren Snow, and I attended.
  • Scout Sunday – Noah Reed, Zachary Hertz, Aaron Moore, Eric Smith, Matthew Grabert, and Nicholas Grabert together with several Boy Scouts from Troop 111 greeted and ushered at the Davis Community Church services 2/5. The people there clearly enjoyed seeing the Scouts there in their uniforms and the boys had a good time too.

3. Pinewood Derby, March 3 – All of your boys should be working on their Pinewood Derby car designs. Tech day (the day when the boys must turn in their finished cars) is February 24. On tech day, the cars are weighed and measured. Also, finishing touches can be put on the cars. Please contact Michael Karoly at mhk34881@pacbell.net if you can help on Tech Day (February 24) or Race Day (March 3).

4. Scouting for Food – Every year we spend one Saturday morning putting out flyers to houses requesting food for the Yolo County Food Bank/STEAC, then the next Saturday, we canvas the same neighborhoods picking up the food people put out. This year we are putting out flyers on March 10 and picking up food on March 17. Our Scouting for Food Coordinator this year, Bill Muller, will be giving us more details soon.

5. Webelos Graduation – This will be our March Pack meeting on March 13. It will be a awesome ceremony and very inspirational for all the boys to see the Webelos II’s “cross over” into Boy Scouts. Boy Scout Troops will also be there to accept the new Scouts.

6. We need new leadership for next year!!! – Every year there are new families that are surprised to know that the Pack is completely run by VOLUNTEERS. This means that the parents of the Cub Scouts have to volunteer at the Pack Level in order for us to have a Pack at all. I will be writing a special email soon about the following positions for next year…

  • Webmaster
  • Cubmaster
  • Assistant Cubmaster
  • Committee Chair
  • Popcorn Kernel

7. Camp Rob Hill – Pack 111 will be having a family camp at the San Francisco Presidio Rob Hill group camp, April 21 returning April 22. Family camp means that siblings are invited too but there will be limited space, so sign up and pay early.

8. Camp Cayuse To Infinity and Beyond – This is a district wide evening camp June 18 – 22 (the first week after school is out for the Summer). In addition to it being REALLY FUN, the wonderful thing about this camp is the amount of requirements the Cubs can get complete for their next rank.

9. CAMP LASSEN 2007! – Pack 111 will be having our Summer Camp at Camp Lassen starting Sunday, July 29 and returning Wednesday, August 1. Save the dates and plan your family vacations so that your son(s) don’t miss this.

January Notes

Hello 2007,

Happy New Year! Hopefully you all had some great times during the holidays. I’m a bit late this month, so I will be brief and send more in separate emails. If anyone sees anything I have missed, let me know.

Here is the news for this month…

1. January Pack meeting Tuesday, December 9, 7:00 PM – This Pack meeting will be hosted by Bear Den 1. The theme of the meeting is “Poles Apart.” I don’t know what Den 1 has in store for us, but the boys are sure to have fun.

2. December Review –

  • Thank you to the Golden Eagle Patrol for hosting and thank you to all the Dens who performed the great skits at our December “Stars!” Pack meeting.
  • Thank you to everyone who brought in warm clothing for the Mustard Seed School and letters for service men and women. Without a doubt, it was all appreciated very much.
  • Rechartering for 2007 is complete. We are an official Cub Scout Pack for another year thanks to the hard work of our Registrar, Gary Darling. There are still some Scouts that need to pay however, and we will be sorting that out in the coming month.

3. Pack Trip to the Chabot Space & Science Center, January 27 – The Pack will be going to the Chabot Space and Science Center (www.chabotspace.org) in the Oakland hills. The last day to sign up will be at the 1/9 pack meeting. Full details will follow in a separate email.

Date: Saturday, Jan. 27th

Time:  12:00 - 5:00 (new time due to early closure at Chabot)

Price:  $10 Adults/$8 Youth (4-12 yrs)*

* Explorit membership entitles you to free entry.

Please plan to pay and return the permission slip and auto info by Tue., 1/9 at the Pack meeting. You can also contact Lori Kibbe at 530-753-9359 or email: Lori.Kibbe@verizonwireless.com.

4. The University of Scouting - The University of Scouting will be held in Woodland at Pioneer HS on January 20, from 8 am to 4 pm. There will be 20 training sessions about Cub Scouts, 4 about Webelos, and 2 about Tiger Cubs. You can view the sessions at www.gec-bsa.org/fs/event/000067/regformuos.pdf. This is open to all adults, not just leaders. PLEASE consider going to this to learn more about how we can all make Scouting a great experience for our boys.

5. February Pack Blue and Gold Dinner Meeting “Aloha Cub Scouts” FRIDAY, February 16, 6:30 PM – Our annual Pack dinner is being hosted by Wolf Den 5. More details about this will be coming, but I understand that we will have a youth Polynesian dance group for entertainment. Remember that only rank advancements and Webelos activity pins will be recognized at this meeting and the March meeting will be Webelos graduation only (no other awards will be given).

6. Pinewood Derby, March 3 – Pinewood derby car kits will be passed out at this Tuesday’s (1/9) Pack meeting. The rules and other info will be sent in another email. Please contact Michael Karoly at mhk34881@pacbell.net if you can help on Tech Day (February 24) or Race Day (March 3).

December Notes

Happy December!

With weather getting cold and rainy and kids out of school for the holidays it is the perfect time to do some Scout advancement activities! I suggest sitting down with your Scout and his Scout book and find some fun things to do that also will count toward advancement. More than likely you will find that he has already done many of the activities and just needs to be signed off. Remember, for an activity to count for this year’s rank advancement the Scout has to do it this scout/school year. However, this year started as soon as our last meeting ended last May so everything done during the summer (including Camp Cayuse & Camp Pico Blanco), counts as this scout year.

Also, on the topic of advancements, your Scout does not need to finish his badge in order to work on, or get signed off on, electives; he just won’t get credit (i.e. arrow points, or Tiger elective beads) for them until he has his badge. In other words, you can’t get arrow points before you get your Wolf badge, but you can get arrow points at the same time you get your Wolf badge if you have already completed enough electives.

Here is the news for this month…

1. December Pack meeting Tuesday, December 12, 7:00 PM. – This Pack meeting will be hosted by Webelos II Golden Eagle patrol. The theme of the meeting is “Cub Scout Stars” and every Scout will be a star on stage. Your den should have a 2 to 3 minute skit, song, or cheer (or a combination) prepared to perform. Also at the meeting:

  • Overseas servicemen letters - Please have your Scouts bring a letter, poem, or drawing to an overseas serviceman or servicewoman. These men and women, particularly those in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, are doing their jobs in difficult circumstances and deserve to be remembered always, but a note from a Cub Scout at holiday time will be extra meaningful. Please put the note in an unsealed envelope.
  • Christmas contributions - Please bring contributions of warm clothes for boys and girls in sizes from 4 to 16. They can be new or used in good condition. They will be collected at the Pack meeting and sent to the Mustard Seed School for homeless children in Sacramento (www.sacramentoloavesandfishes.org/mustardseed.html). Thank you for giving.

2. October Review –

  • November Pack meeting – The Cake Bake was a big hit as always and raised $1,028 for the Pack. Thanks to the Webelos II Hawk patrol led by Julie Rooney and Steve Christianson. Also thank you to our auctioneer Kevin McGrew and his helpers from Troop 66. Julie wrote a really nice article about the Cake Bake published in the November 21 issue of the Davis Enterprise. There should be some great pictures up soon on the Photos page courtesy of Gary Darling. I think he got shots of all the cakes!
  • Popcorn – The popcorn sale is done, but if you need any more popcorn, there is some still available. Please contact Ed at edslavich@yahoo.com. We had a great sale this year even though we were not counting on it as our only large fundraiser. This, together with other fundraisers, already complete, puts Pack 111 in a comfortable position this year.
  • Verizon Foundation Grant – Speaking of finances, Verizon Wireless Corporation, through their Employee Volunteer Incentive Program, has donated to $750 to Pack 111 and the Davis Community Church. This program is designed to recognize the volunteer efforts of Verizon employees who volunteer for local non-profit organizations. Lori Kibbe, as a Verizon employee, qualified for the grant because of her many hours of work for Pack 111. Thank you Lori Kibbe and thank you Verizon Wireless! Everyone should check with your own companies to see if you might qualify for a similar volunteer incentive program.

3. January Pack meeting “Poles Apart” Tuesday, January 9, 7:00 PM – This Pack meeting will be hosted by Bear Den 1. More news will come on what we will be doing at the meeting, but it more certainly will be fun.

4. Pack Trip to the Chabot Space & Science Center, January 27 – The Pack will be going to the Chabot Space and Science Center (http://www.chabotspace.org/) in the Oakland hills. Details will follow and early sign-up will be available at the December Pack meeting.

5. Pinewood Derby, March 3 – Pinewood derby planning meetings are starting. If you would like to get involved, please contact Michael Karoly at mhk34881@pacbell.net

November Notes

Happy November!

We just got back from a very memorable trip to the USS Pampanito. If you didn’t get to go on the overnight trip, I highly recommend that you visit the ship on Fisherman’s Wharf during public museum hours. She is incredible. Pack 111 tries to go on an overnight ship trip every year. Especially if your son is a Wolf or a Tiger, you will probably get a chance to go on the Pamapanito again with Pack 111 in the future.

The big news this month is CAKE BAKE! See the attached flier and read on…

1. November Pack meeting Tuesday, November 14, 6:30 PM. – This Pack meeting will be our annual Cub Scout Cake Bake hosted by Webelos II Hawk patrol. It is always really fun to see the different designs and cake names the Scouts come up with. See the flier for all the details and note that the meeting will start at 6:30. We will not be using the “Cubs in Shining Armor” theme at the Pack meeting, but the Dens can still use it in their Den activities for November if they want to. After the opening flag ceremony, announcements, etc., each den will chose one cake from their den to be auctioned off by our visiting auctioneer, an ex-Pack 111 Cubmaster, and Scouter extraordinaire, Kevin McGrew. The rest of the cakes will be displayed for silent auction.

2. Scout Registration – Everyone should be registered at this point. If you are not, please contact Gary Darling (Gary_Darling@sbcglobal.net), our registrar, immediately. Registration is necessary for rechartering our Pack (happening now) and rechartering our Pack is necessary to be an official Scouting organization. Without an official charter, among other things, we would loose our liability insurance coverage.

3. 2nd Tiger Den – I have been unsuccessful in getting an adult to lead a second Tiger Den. It is quite disappointing because I have been in contact with several people who wanted to join a Tiger Den, but no one wanted to be the leader. I am pretty sure that some of those boys have now joined other Packs, but others have not. If anyone knows an adult that would consider being a Tiger Den leader, please contact me. I am sure we could get another Tiger Den going if we had a leader. It is not too late.

4. Popcorn – Popcorn is now at Ed Slavich’s house and is ready for pick-up. Those of you that have popcorn orders should have received an email with instructions about where and when. If you did not, please contact Ed at edslavich@yahoo.com. Because Ed had to order full cases, we have some popcorn that has not been pre-sold. If you want more popcorn that you have already ordered, please let Ed know.

5. October Review

  • October Pack meeting – Thanks to Susie Dawson and Wolf Den 2 for the wonderful Raingutter Regatta race. Also a big thanks to the Boy Scouts of Troop 111 for helping. All the Scouts had a great time.
  • Weboree – Several Webelos attended the Weboree October 28 and had the chance to meet Boy Scouts from Troops in our area. They also worked on several activity badge requirements. One of the most important things a Webelo must do in their last year in Cub Scouts is choose a Boy Scout Troop to join. This event is a fun way to meet Troops. Thank you to Lauren Snow for escorting the Webelos for the day.
  • Pampanito – Another great trip organized by Stuart Woo. The last of his 3 sons is now in Webelos now though, and after years of helping Pack 111 with outings, Stuart will be turning over the outing coordination to Craig Kibbe. Thank you Stuart!… and thank you Craig!

6. Photos of Pack 111 Activities – I know a lot of you are taking some great pictures at Scout outings, Pack meetings, Den meetings, etc. Please share them with the rest of the Pack. The way to do that is to post them on a free photo share website such as www.kodakgallery.com, photos.yahoo.com, www.apple.com/dotmac, www.snapfish.com, or any other site you use, and then send the link to our webmaster Patrick Rooney (). Do not send him the actual digital photos, just the link to your photo album. In keeping with Boy Scout guidelines, please do not identify children by name in your online photo albums. If you want to check out pictures from past Pack 111 activities, go to our photos page.

7. December Pack meeting “Cub Scout Stars” Tuesday, December 12, 7:00 PM – This Pack meeting will be hosted by Webelos II Golden Eagle Patrol and will feature all of our Cub Scouts as “Stars”. In other words, it will be time to do SKITS! Each Den should prepare a 2 to 3 minute skit that the whole Den can participate in.

8. Pinewood Derby – Pinewood derby (usually scheduled for early February) planning is starting soon. Several of you have signed up to help on the planning committee, but if you have not and would like to, please contact Michael Karoly at mhk34881@pacbell.net

September Notes

Hello!

The year has begun..... Our first Pack meeting of the year is next week, Tuesday, September 12 at 7:00. Like last year, we will be having our Pack meetings on the second Tuesday of the month, 7:00 PM, at the Davis Community Church, so please put them on your calendar. The only exceptions are February and April. See the attached Pack calendar for specifics. PLEASE read this whole email. There are some great events happening early this year. In particular, we are trying to get some good fundraising out of the way so that we don’t have to worry about funds later in the year. In addition to raising funds, these events are supposed to be fun and give the Cubs a chance to participate in service to the Pack.

1. Summer Review

  • Car Wash – Thank you to Michelle Weaver for organizing a fun and profitable car wash in June.
  • Camp Pico Blanco – More than half of the boys in the Pack went to Camp Pico Blanco in July. It was really fun and we will have a “Pack 111 at Pico Blanco” slide show at our first meeting. Thank you to Cameron Smith, our camp coordinator, for making it such a great trip. Patches! - If you did not get your Camp Pico Blanco ’06 patch, please see me at the Pack meeting.
  • End of Summer Pool Party – Our Pool party August 27 was a huge success. It was great to see everyone, and several new Scout families interested in joining Pack 111 came for burgers, dogs, snow cones, and swimming.
  • New Tiger Den 3 – We have a new Tiger Den already formed this summer. It is being lead by Kristy Powell. I will be introducing the new Tiger Scouts at the Pack meeting. A second Tiger Den is already forming so please encourage any potential Tiger Scouts (and adult partners) you know to attend our 9/12 Pack meeting.

2. September Pack meeting “Zoo Adventures” Tuesday, September 12, 7:00 PM – This Pack meeting will be hosted by Webelos Alligator Patrol (formerly Den 3). There will be a magician, and lots of fun there. This meeting is also an opportunity for Scouts to get signed up for a lot of upcoming events too (see below).

3. Gary Darling, our Pack Registrar this year, will be at the Pack meeting with forms for you to fill out. He can also take your checks made out to “Pack 111”. Please note: If this registration fee is a hardship for any family, scholarships are available. We are serious about this. We (the Pack leadership) do not want any family to turn away from Pack 111 because of the registration cost. Please talk to Gary or myself if the cost is a hardship.

4. Auburn Century Bike Event – September 16. This is a fun 100-mile bike ride in Auburn and Pack 111 will be staffing one of the food/drink stations along the way. We need at least 13 Scouts to be there to help. Please see the attached flyer.

5. Popcorn – Popcorn sales are started! As I said in my earlier email about the Merryhill and UCC site sales, popcorn sales is a major fundraiser for our Pack and for the local council. In the past we have relied very heavily on Popcorn sales. Because we were pushing for sales so hard, I heard that a number of families just bought way more popcorn than they could use just to support the Pack. We don’t want you to do that this year, but we are still selling popcorn. The popcorn order sheets will be available at the Pack meeting and starting September 16 orders can be taken for delivery in November.

6. Fall Rummage Sale – DCC Lawn Saturday, September 23, will hold out first annual Pack 111 Rummage Sale! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Lori Kibbe for organizing this event. You should have all received Lori’s note I sent out August 25. We have great expectations for this event, and raising some good money here will really take the pressure off the popcorn sales. Sign up to help at the 9/12 Pack meeting!

7. Cub Scout Roundup – A new Cub Scout recruitment night is being held at the Davis Public Library 7:00 – 8:30 PM, Wednesday, September 27. If you know anyone who is interested in Scouting and wants to talk to all the Packs in Davis, we will all be represented there.

8. Fall Overnight Trip (USS Pampanito) – November 4. The USS Pampanito is a WW II-era submarine docked at Pier 45 in San Francisco (www.maritime.org/pamphome.htm). Space will be very limited on this trip. The details will be announced and sign-ups will be taken at the Sept 12 pack meeting. The first families to get their checks in will get the bunks!
